Glass doors help stop heat loss when your fire is dying down and you'd like to go to bed, but you can't wait for the fire to go out completely so you can shut the damper.
When vented gas logs are installed, the damper is supposed to be disabled to the open position; glass doors help prevent heat loss when the logs are not in use.
