English Style Cast Iron Fireplace Surrounds are most commonly used as a facing for the fireplace opening. Our models average 38" tall, 38" wide with openings 16" to 18" wide.
These models were originally designed for use with coal burning fireplaces, though wood also be burned in them, too. Additionally, we offer a retrofit gas coal burner to fit perfectly into the firebox.
English style cast iron surrounds are also well suited to creating a faux fireplace where you can burn candles or electric fires.
The rear of most cast iron surrounds are not flat, so you'll find you need a fireplace opening at least 34" tall to accommodate English surrounds. Unless you're planning on undertaking a complex renovation, look only for the models that we mention are flat on the back side.
English style cast iron surrounds have a nominal measurement of 38" x 38", so they're perfectly suited for a design where a small mantel (36" x 36" nominal opening) can be installed with the inner edges of the mantel OVERLAPPING the outside edges of the cast iron surround.
INSTALLATION TIPS for MASONRY FIREPLACES
When installed into an existing masonry fireplace, you can drill a hole into each of the 4 corners and attach to the masonry with lag bolts for the most secure installation. With this method, drill the holes where the overlapping mantel will cover the bolts.
If the cast iron surround you've purchased includes a firebox, please note that the flue outlet on the cast iron firebox is not designed to allow attachment of American style stainless steel chimney liners. If the restoration job will include a stainless steel chimney liner then the liner should stop at the top of the smoke chamber, leaving the smoke chamber area intact to provide sufficient draft to the chimney.

It is absolutely forbidden to use an English cast iron insert to create a fireplace. They are uninsulated, and only suitable for use as an accessory installed into a masonry fireplace. You cannot simply attach a chimney to create a gas or solid fuel burning fireplace!
If you're installing a gas burner into your surround, note that the damper door must be removed per safety codes. If the damper door is left in place and the burner were to be cut onk fumes and soot will enter your home.
NEVER UNDERTAKE restoration of a fireplace or chimney unless you are trained, licensed and insured to perform this type of work.
